Overview

The project will run from November 2005 to September 2006.

Its aim is to map practice-led research in our fields. This is not completely straightforward as the term "practice-led" research is used to describe a great diversity of practices and methodologies, as well as giving rise to a good deal of debate. It is a relatively new area of research that has yet to gain a "canon" of methods and exemplars. Practice-led research has connections to many other disciplines and may draw on methods and ideas from across the natural and social sciences and the humanities.

The review will draw on the experience and knowledge of a project group drawn from 10 universities. Researchers across the UK and further afield will be invited to contribute via town meetings and an online conference to draw in ideas, case studies and experience and a questionnaire survey will be used to test our conclusions and seek specific data. We will be drawing on data from a wide range of sources to develop our "map" and we will use visual information design techniques to develop our understanding of the data and how it may be organised to form a useful map. Case studies will be used to illustrate the outcomes and we welcome any material that will help with this.

The outcome will be a report to AHRC but we will seek other ways of disseminating what we have learned to a wide community including a project website and publication in relevant media.
