My Current Research Interests

My recent research features two related strands. I am a member of the Public Health Team and of the New Deal for Communities National Evaluation Team in the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at SHU (http://www.shu.ac.uk/cresr/). I am also collaborating with Anthony Meehan of The Open University http://mcs.open.ac.uk/am4469/), examining how electronic government (e-Government) technologies may be exploited to promote and sustain community well-being. Public Health and Community Well-being

Recent research has focused on multivariate and multilevel statistical modelling of large, complex datasets. Particular interests include:

·         modelling the pathways between deprivation, social capital, crime and fear of crime, health and well-being;

·         the relevance of health and housing to social and economic regeneration;

·         the evaluation of policy interventions particularly in their impact on health and health inequalities;

·         the concept and measurement of social quality and the enhancement of community trust.

My most recent publications in this area include:

e-Government: Trust, Social Capital and Information Technology

With Anthony Meehan (The Open University) I have been exploring the design and management of information systems that mediate community access to government and community services (e-government services). We are particularly interested in designing systems that promote trust between users and providers and thus enhance social capital and social inclusion.

We are collaborating with:

o        Anna Tan (Department for Communities and Local Government) on promoting the effectiveness of community advice agencies across five boroughs of North London (CASweb);

o        Grainne Collins (Trinity College, Dublin) on trust and employment;

o        Home Connections on ICT mediated allocation of public and social housing - Choice-based Letting (CBL).

I am Principal Lecturer in Applied Statistics with extensive experience in teaching multivariate and survey methods at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I have successfully supervised seven PhD students and one MPhil student.

I have been an elected staff representative to the university’s Academic Board and enjoyed many years of experience in this role.

Prior to joining Sheffield Hallam University, I gained a BSc(Econ) and MSc in Statistics from LSE (1969) and a PGCE from Goldsmiths College (1970). I was a lecturer in statistics and research statistician at the Institute of Child Health, University of London 1970 to 1976.
